Communication for Development Consultant
Translating vision into communication that drives progress, engages stakeholders, and turns strategic goals into measurable social impact.
I craft content that technical experts find accurate and local partners find empowering, materials that meet international reporting standards while remaining accessible to the people driving change on the ground. I support development organizations, NGOs, and institutions working at the intersection of policy, community, and change. Designing communication strategies that go beyond visibility, engaging communities, building local capacity, shifting behavior, and creating the participatory conditions for sustainable development impact.
Beyond Visibility: Securing Sustainability Through Stakeholder Engagement
Development work without communication strategy is impact that never lands.
The most technically sound development intervention can fail if communities don’t understand it, trust it, or see themselves reflected in it. Communication in the development sector is not a reporting function or a visibility exercise. It is the mechanism through which change becomes possible, through awareness, engagement, behavior shift, and the strengthening of local voices to sustain what external actors begin.
The World Bank distinguishes development communication from corporate communication precisely because its purpose is different: not to promote an institution, but to support sustainable change by engaging key stakeholders in the process itself. This requires participatory approaches, culturally appropriate messaging, and communication systems designed for communities, not for headquarters.
Working across Mali, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, and Canada, I have seen what happens when development communication is treated as an afterthought, and the difference it makes when it is built into program design from the start.
Development programs that communicate with their communities. Stronger civil society voices. Better-coordinated institutional actors. and communication capacity that outlasts the project cycle.
From the field
Working on extractives transparency in West Africa, the communication challenge was not producing materials but designing a campaign (#fixaid, #trace) that could be owned and driven by local civil society, with messaging adapted to the political and cultural context of each country rather than translated from a global template.
Similarly, the SDG Youth Ambassadors campaign in Mali was designed from the outset to build the communication capacity of young advocates, not to speak for them, but to amplify their own voices through structured advocacy training, multilingual materials, and digital platforms they could operate independently.
Approach
Community-Centered, Evidence-Grounded, Locally Sustained
Development communication begins with listening before it begins with speaking. Before designing any campaign, capacity program, or advocacy initiative, I work to understand the communication environment: who the key actors are, what channels communities trust, what barriers exist to information access and engagement, and what existing communication assets can be strengthened rather than replaced.
From there, I design communication strategies that are participatory by design, not as a consultation checkbox, but as a core methodology. This means working with local partners, building the communication capacity of civil society organizations, and ensuring that what is built can be maintained long after the project ends.
I apply ICT-for-development approaches where appropriate, connecting communities to mobile platforms, digital tools, and information networks that extend reach and enable two-way engagement in low-resource environments.
“The best development communication leaves behind capacity, not just content.”
